Waste Segregation & Colour Coding

The colour-coding system defined in the 'The Safe Management of Healthcare Waste Guidance' is not mandatory but will help to achieve a standard approach across the UK. It will provide an easy and effective way of segregating waste on the basis of waste classification and ensuring that it goes to a suitable treatment/disposal facility.

  • yellowInfectious Hazardous Waste for incineration
  • orangeInfectious Hazardous Waste to be disposed of using alternative technology
  • blueCytotoxic/Cytostatic for incineration
  • stripeOffensive wastes and to be disposed at a suitably licensed facility
  • blackDomestic waste and to be disposed at a suitably licensed facility
  • blackAmalgam waste (recovery)

It is also vital that different waste streams are segregated to ensure cross-contamination does not occur. Some useful points regarding segregation include:

  • - Household and clinical waste is segregated at all times
  • - Non-hazardous clinical waste should be segregated from infectious hazardous waste.
  • - Offensive waste should not be stored with infectious hazardous waste
  • - Waste should not be allowed to escape or leak and manual handling should be kept to a   minimum.
  • - All types of waste bags should be discarded when no more than three-quarters full and be   securely tied and labeled where applicable prior to disposal.
